Jean Sibelius: Piano Quartet in C minor
Ilmari Hannikainen: Piano Quartet op. 2
Johannes Brahms: Piano Quartet in G minor op. 25
Vienna connects all three composers of this evening. Jean Sibelius studied there, as did his contemporary Ilmari Hannikainen later on. Their piano quartets mark the beginning and end of Art Nouveau with its dreamy elegance. And at the same time, they are both youthful works by the composers - just like the Piano Quartet op. 25 by Johannes Brahms, who proved with this debut in Vienna that chamber music can also dance Csárdás.
