The documentary "Im Osten was Neues" will be shown. It focuses on Thomas "Eichi" Eichstädt, who coaches the FC Pio soccer team in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Many of the young players have fled their home countries and are trying to arrive in Germany - between job hunting, insecurity and the desire for recognition and acceptance. The film accompanies them in their everyday training and in personal moments and shows how soccer can provide support and create community.
At the same time, the film focuses on the ambivalences of the main character: for many, "Eichi" is an important reference person, but he carries a burdened past with him and looks back on a dark time as a right-wing extremist. "Something New in the East" tells of ruptures and changes, of trust and responsibility - and of how difficult and necessary it is to face up to one's own history.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with the director Loraine Blumenthal.
