To mark the 125th anniversary of Anna Seghers' birth, the Stralsund Literature Circle invites you to a special reading session. It is dedicated to her novel "Transit", one of the most moving books about flight, identity and the state of waiting between two worlds.
Heinrich Böll called "Transit" the most beautiful novel that Anna Seghers wrote, and the writer Christa Wolf confessed: "Transit is one of those books that intervene in my life, that my life continues to write on, so that I have to pick it up every few years to see what has happened to me and to them in the meantime."
Written in exile in Mexico during the Second World War, "Transit" tells the story of a nameless German refugee in Marseille, the last gateway before crossing to freedom. He comes into possession of the papers of a deceased writer, while thousands desperately wait for a transit visa that will decide between life and death.
Marseille becomes a surreal limbo, a harbor for the stranded where the bureaucracy of fear reigns. Here, at this crossroads of human existence, the protagonist meets the mysterious Marie, the wife of the dead writer, and a captivating, fateful love story unfolds.
We cordially invite all those interested to read the 300-page novel and come to the book discussion in January 2026:
