The Sea Bear—a rare natural phenomenon on the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea
Although there was complete calm in the early morning of May 17, 1888, the coastal fishermen of Ahrenshoop were surprised by several successive tidal waves up to two meters high, which tossed their boats high up onto the dunes. Subsequent investigations revealed that this so-called “Seebär” had originated far out in the western Baltic Sea and had reached the entire stretch of coastline between Travemünde and the island of Hiddensee. Prerow-based author Bernd Goltings will describe all the reports surrounding this rare tidal phenomenon in a fascinating lecture this evening.
