A lecture by Dr. Martin Buchsteiner (University of Greifswald) on the voting behavior of Mecklenburgers in the years 1918-1933.
On 14.11.2025, the SCHABBELL has been able to win Dr. Martin Buchsteiner (University of Greifswald). In his lecture, he will provide fascinating insights into voting behavior in northwestern Mecklenburg during the Weimar Republic. What we take for granted today was an achievement for the people of Wismar a good 100 years ago:
In Mecklenburg-Schwerin, not only women but also men only gained the general right to elect a state parliament in 1918. The electoral regulations, which were drawn up by the People's Ministry, remained the subject of sometimes heated debate until they were suspended in 1933. Right-wing as well as liberal and left-wing parties tried to shape the electoral regulations in such a way as to secure their electoral victory. The lecture will outline these attempts with a view to their effects and trace continuity and change in voting behavior using election results from the city and surrounding area of Wismar.
