The writer Erich Kästner, who remained in Germany despite strong hostility during the Nazi dictatorship, and the poet Mascha Kalekò, who had to leave Germany due to her Jewish origins, meet for a working discussion after the war. They not only talk about their literary work, but soon also about their personal lives, their successes and failures, their hopes and fears.

A touching evening which, despite all the thoughtfulness, does not leave out the humorous aspects.
