When the cranes Jana and Jonas wake up one morning, everything is different. The water has disappeared from the alder quarry. When they learn that the beavers have disappeared, the trees have strange markings and excavator tracks have been discovered in the forest, they suspect that they and their habitat are in danger. With the help of Rocky the pet rat, they manage to make the children aware of their problem. They soon organize a demonstration and hold an audience with the mayor.
