Lecture and talk at the Federal Archives - Stasi Records Archive Schwerin on August 30, 2025

In the first year after the popular uprising, the mood in the GDR remained tense. Food shortages and supply bottlenecks characterized everyday life. The SED courted the loyalty of the population with major events and cautious political and economic easing.

At the same time, the Stasi covered the GDR with a wave of arrests and show trials in search of spies and agents. These were intended to intimidate Western secret services and opponents in the country.

The Stasi produced almost daily reports on the situation in the country, reflecting the various campaigns and their resonance among the population. In addition to documenting the mood within the country, the daily reports also painted a colorful picture of the secret service war in East Germany.

In his lecture on Saturday, August 30, at the Stasi Records Archive in Schwerin, Martin Stief (Bundesarchiv - Stasi Records Archive), author of the book "Die DDR im Blick der Stasi 1954. Geheime Berichte an die SED-Führung" (The GDR in the eyes of the Stasi 1954. Secret reports to the SED leadership), will present these reports.

In addition to the lecture, there will be a guided tour of the archive. It is also possible to apply for access to Stasi documents. Please bring a valid identity document with you.
