The AGRONEUM Alt Schwerin is a unique open-air museum: It wasn’t built on a greenfield site, but has grown since 1963 amidst authentic historical structures. In addition to an extensive collection of technology and everyday objects, visitors will also find farmworkers’ homes dating from 1910, 1942, and the 1960s. Visitors explore the museum on foot throughout the entire village—from the church with its 13th-century foundation, to the estate complex with its manor house, steward’s residence, large granaries, and 19th-century stables, all the way to the home of an LPG member from the 1970s. The conceptual integration of these “trendy exhibits” has proven successful and is gratefully received by visitors. The large outdoor area, featuring a village blacksmith’s shop, a wheelwright’s workshop, a Dutch windmill, a sawmill, a rope-making workshop, and a narrow-gauge railway, rounds out the entire museum complex and also serves as the central venue for the museum festivals—held nearly every month—where agricultural history is brought to life.
