One of Germany's most renowned authors, Christoph Hein, is coming to Stralsund for a reading on September 19, 2025. He has accepted an invitation from the city library and STRANDLÄUFER Verlag to present his latest novel "Das Narrenschiff" in the Löwenschen Saal of the town hall from 6 pm.
The much-discussed book, published in March of this year, describes the events from the emergence to the fall of the GDR through the fate of three men and their relatives. They are convinced that they are serving the better German state. Close to power, however, they also see the mistakes of real socialism and sooner or later realize that they are sailing in an involuntary crew on board a ship of fools.
Christoph Hein was born on April 8, 1944 in Heinzendorf, Silesia. After the end of the war, the family moved to Bad Düben near Leipzig, where he grew up. He studied philosophy and logic at the University of Leipzig from 1967 and graduated from Humboldt University Berlin in 1971. From 1974 to 1979, Hein worked as an in-house playwright at the Volksbühne Berlin. His breakthrough came in 1982/83 with his novella "Der fremde Freund/Drachenblut". Christoph Hein has been awarded numerous prizes, including the Uwe Johnson Prize and the Stefan Heym Prize. His novels repeatedly top the bestseller lists.
