The GO game (Chinese: Weiqi) originated in China. It is one of the oldest board games in the world and represents a treasure of traditional Chinese culture. Prof. Yaxin Zhang from Greifswald is happy to pass on the rules of the game and the associated culture to anyone interested.
The board game Go is a very old strategy game that originated in China over 2500 years ago. It is considered to be one of the oldest board games still played in the world.
Game board (Go board, "Goban"):
A square grid of 19x19 lines (often 9x9 or 13x13 for beginners). The game is played on the intersections of the lines, not in the squares.
Pieces:
Two players - Black and White - take it in turns to place round pieces on the intersections. The pieces remain there until they are captured.
Aim of the game:
You try to control as much territory as possible by enclosing empty areas of the board with a "wall" of your own stones.
You can also capture your opponent's stones by completely encircling them and thus depriving them of all "liberties" (neighboring empty points).
Go is considered to be much more complex than chess: there are many more possible moves and strategies.
