Flare is a European quartet that plays top-class contemporary jazz.

Flare is a European quartet that plays top-class contemporary jazz and brings together musicians from Latvia, Great Britain and Germany.

Constantin Krahmer, pianist and composer from Rostock, has been organizing the Bron concert series since 2021. As a musician, he released the trio album Care with New York bassist Thomas Morgan and Leif Berger on drums in 2024 and is constantly working on new music, which he releases on his label Yew Records. In January 2023, he invited Karlis Auzins to play with him in Rostock for the first time and in return traveled to Riga for a concert the following summer.

Karlis Auzins is one of the most prolific contemporary jazz musicians in Latvia, with an incredible range of musical output, ranging from saxophone solo recordings with a completely unique approach and sound to his own quartet and a duo with strong influences of contemporary classical music. In March 2025 he was awarded the Latvian Grand Music Award 2025 in the category "Outstanding Performance in Jazz".

At the concert in Latvia, they played pieces by both Auzins and Krahmer for the first time and found that the pieces complemented each other perfectly to form a coherent program, so that the idea of a collaboration soon arose. With the great rhythm section consisting of Ruth Goller (electric bass) and Leif Berger (drums) in mind, they began to write music that was precisely tailored to the quartet. The pieces leave plenty of room for improvisation, but also have melodic song-like qualities, spiced with a range of musical influences such as contemporary classical music, improvised music, traditional folk music, etc., with the aim of letting the musicians unfold their full potential as improvisers and putting the band as a whole in a state of resonance.

This evening's concert will be recorded and released as a live album by Yew Records in 2026!
