"From the life of a ferry: The Vitte between Rügen and Hiddensee" - Invitation to the author reading with Anja Heitmüller on November 25, 2025 at 7 p.m. in the Stralsund City Library, admission 6:30 p.m.
For a year, the author Anja Heitmüller accompanied the crew of the motor ferry Vitte on their five daily ferry trips between the islands at irregular intervals.
As a vital "main artery", the only passenger ferry on this route is solely responsible for supplying the population of Hiddensee. A currently irreplaceable, idiosyncratic ferry, which in its first life before 1992 operated as MS Amrum in North Friesland between Föhr, Amrum, the Halligen islands and Schlüttsiel.
People from very different walks of life cross the Bodden waters of the Baltic Sea together in a very confined space: crew members, commuting craftsmen, cleaning ladies, garbage drivers, islanders, teachers, IT specialists, vacationers longing for Hiddensee, others. The author has portrayed this contrasting, yet village-like and peaceful Vitte cosmos. The result is a book about an eventful place of quiet coexistence and togetherness with numerous current and historical photos. About a ferry that connects.
