Reading & discussion as part of the program "Women in Divided Germany" | Moderation: Dr. Steffi Brüning (DuG)
Hanna Krause is the main character in Annett Gröschner's highly acclaimed novel, which tells the story of the twisting 20th century through her life - through the story of an "ordinary" woman who would normally be one of the many invisible, untold ones. Hanna experienced two revolutions, two dictatorships, an uprising, two world wars and two defeats, two democracies, the Kaiser and other supposed leaders, gave birth to six children and was unable to bury two of them. She later had a good view of people's relationships ten meters below her from a crane in Magdeburg and died in time before she could no longer understand the world. A novel about the end of the industrial age and about heroines in East Germany - what remains of them?
Annett Gröschner, born in Magdeburg, has received numerous awards for her literary work. Her bestseller "Drei ostdeutsche Frauen betrinken sich und gründen den idealen Staat" (2024), co-authored with Peggy Mädler and Wenke Seemann, was recently published by Hanser.
