Lecture as part of the training series "On the way to precaution - cultural property protection and emergency preparedness in combination"
Cultural property protection requires precaution and preparation for emergencies. In a cooperative training series, the State Office for Culture and Monument Preservation (LAKD), the State Palaces, Gardens and Art Collections of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (SSGK), the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Museum Association (MVMV) and the dbv State Association of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are jointly offering state-wide training courses and lectures on the subject of emergency networks and emergency preparedness in cultural property protection. The aim is to provide professional support and guidance for regional initiatives to set up emergency networks. The training series is funded by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs and organized by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Günther Uecker State Library.
On Thursday, 06.11.2025, state archaeologist Dr. Detlef Jantzen will speak about threats to archaeological cultural heritage and show ways in which it can be preserved for the future as part of the series from 6 pm .
Archaeology is exciting, no question about it. Especially when it takes place on television, on the internet or abroad. The relationship with the archaeological cultural heritage on our own doorstep is somewhat more complicated. Unfortunately, the risks posed by the negligent or even deliberate destruction of archaeological sites should not be underestimated. The use of metal detectors is widespread and has made the looting of archaeological sites much easier. In addition, there are latent dangers due to erosion or drying out. But the archaeological archive is also exposed to risks, as a glance at history teaches us.
The lecture gives an overview of the main threats and shows what possibilities there are to preserve the archaeological cultural heritage of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for the future. Registration is not necessary.
