HÄNDE WEG VON MISSISSIPPI was based on the novel of the same name by Cornelia Funke and directed by Detlev Buck in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the summer of 2006.
Summer vacation at last! 10-year-old Emma (Zoë Charlotte Mannhardt) can hardly wait to be back in the country with her grandmother Dolly (Katharina Thalbach). When she arrives in the small town, she is pleased to discover that everything is as it always was. But that's not quite true: old Klipperbusch has died and his nephew Albert Gansmann (Christoph Maria Herbst), known to Emma's friends only as the "Alligator", is planning his future inheritance in his own way. He has big plans for the estate, but there is no room for Klipperbusch's mare Mississippi. So he calls in the horse butcher without further ado. Emma is able to persuade Dolly at the last minute to buy the horse from Gansmann. From now on, Mississippi belongs to Emma.
But a short time later, Gansmann is at the door and wants the mare back. It will not be spontaneous love of animals that drives him. So what is behind Gansmann's wish? In this exciting summer, Emma, Dolly and their friends need ingenuity, courage and determination to save more than just the mare Mississippi from Gansmann.
