Johann Sebastian Bach: Orchestral Suites
Conductor: Svetlomir Zlatkov
Norddeutsche Philharmonie Rostock
Johann Sebastian Bach: Orchestral Suites No. 1 in C major BWV 1066 + No. 3 in D major BWV 1068 + No. 4 in D major BWV 1069
The new 1st Kapellmeister Svetlomir Zlatkov makes his Baroque Classical debut with music by Johann Sebastian Bach. The young conductor trained at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts and has previously worked as a choirmaster, director of studies and conductor in Vienna, Linz and Nordhausen.
The program includes three of Bach's four famous orchestral suites, which form a finale to the great Baroque genre. Bach himself referred to the suites as overtures in accordance with the introductory movements. The works were most probably written between 1717 and 1723 in Köthen, where he was appointed Hochfürstlich Anhalt-Cöthenischer Kapellmeister by Prince Leopold von Anhalt. The dance movements of the four suites are preceded by longer overtures which, in contrast to the Italian concerto, show a reference to the French style of the time.
