Lecture on the motif of levitation in sculpture
On August 23, 1937, Ernst Barlach's iconic "Güstrow Memorial" was removed from Güstrow Cathedral by order of the National Socialists. To mark this memorable date, we invite you to a special commemorative event.
Dr. Magdalena Schulz-Ohm, Director of the Ernst Barlach Museums Güstrow, will give a lecture on the motif of levitation in sculpture and the eventful history of Ernst Barlach's bronze sculpture, which he created as a poignant memorial to the victims of the First World War. However, just ten years later, the bronze original fell victim to National Socialist art and cultural policy. It was confiscated as "degenerate art" and later presumably melted down. Together with the Güstrow cathedral community, we would like to remember, reflect and create space to honor a work of art that still stands for humanity today.
