The Klützer Winkel was once the breadbasket of Mecklenburg. Anyone cycling through here passes through a landscape that tells the story of this prosperity—in the form of Baroque estates, manor farms, and quiet villages that hardly anyone would look for on a map.
The route begins in the Baltic resort of Boltenhagen, where affluent vacationers strolled more than 200 years ago. From here, the bike path leads to Klütz—even from a distance, the “Red Bishop’s Cap,” the tower of St. Mary’s Church, greets you. Just beyond it lies Bothmer Castle, the largest Baroque castle complex in northern Germany, with a sprawling park that invites you to take a deep breath and linger.
The route continues past a motte-and-bailey hill to the Stellshagen manor house, now an eco-hotel serving vegetarian cuisine made with produce from its own gardens. The villages of Rankendorf and Kalkhorst each boast a restored castle—both privately owned; Kalkhorst Castle features one of Germany’s most biodiverse parks. The Brook Estate combines organic farming with vacation apartments in historic buildings.
Just before returning to Boltenhagen, one last stop is well worth it: the Redewisch manor house, nestled amid floodplains, fields, and parkland. The Baltic Sea is never far away—views in Steinbeck and at Kleinklützhöved will remind you of that.
