Peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst

Wild Beauty Between the Baltic Sea and Bodden

Anyone who has ever stayed on the peninsula, even if only for a swim, can hardly escape this irresistible magic, the brittle charm of the untamed beaches and the weather-beaten forests.

An idyllic walk on the western beach on the Darß: three people enjoy the sunset while the coast glows in warm colors and nature comes to rest.

The narrow headland between the sea and the Bodden, with its shallow and steep banks, beach lakes, bays and dunes, is one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A crown jewel of nature that is strictly protected by the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park.

Windstorms give this region its wildness and, even in the most peaceful summer, give an idea of how much the trees on the cliffs here struggle with the whims of nature in winter. Painters and poets, scientists and thinkers in particular appreciated the pristine nature. With brush and paint, in poems and stories, they captured the harsh forces of nature on canvas and paper. Since then, great value has been placed on all things original. Today, new houses still mostly have reed roofs, smoothly plastered facades, bold paintwork and sometimes richly decorated doors - a paradise for architecture enthusiasts and nature lovers.

In spring and fall, the migratory birds in particular attract the attention of visitors. On some evenings, hundreds of thousands of , geese and swans fly over the Bodden landscape - a fascinating spectacle that captivates ornithologists and holidaymakers of all ages.

The most beautiful places

in the Fischland-Darß-Zingst lagoon landscape

Zingst

Zingst is located in the east of the peninsula and, as a recognized seaside health resort, has ideal conditions for bathing and recreation with its sandy beach almost 30 meters wide and numerous shallow water areas. Boating enthusiasts can also look forward to the Zeesenboot regatta, which takes place every year towards June, when the traditional sailing fishing boats come back to life.

Ribnitz-Damgarten

The resort town of Ribnitz-Damgarten is not called the amber town for nothing: Since 1932, the production of amber fish land jewelry set in silver has linked the town to the gold of the sea - anyone looking for a special vacation souvenir should pay Ribnitz-Damgarten a visit. Deeper insights into the origins of Baltic jewelry are also provided by the German Amber Museum located here, while the Ribnitz Great Moor and the adjacent Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park are popular destinations for hikers and nature lovers.

Ahrenshoop

Between Fischland and Darß is the picturesque Baltic seaside resort of Ahrenshoop, which inspired artists such as Paul Müller-Kaempff, Erich Heckel and Marianne von Werefkin to settle here and establish an artists' colony together with like-minded people even before the former small fishing village was developed for tourism. The community, with its art museum, galleries and exhibitions, and its special lighting conditions, is therefore well worth a visit for art and nature lovers alike.

Born

Born is worth a stay especially for nature lovers. For with the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, the largest national park on Germany's Baltic Sea coast borders on the tranquil Bodden village. In autumn, the protected natural area attracts thousands of cranes that rest here on their flight south. Thanks to its shallow water entry points, Born is also suitable for family beach vacations on the Baltic Sea.

Prerow

In the north of the peninsula surrounded by the Darß forest lies the Baltic resort of Prerow. With its two beaches, the former fishing village is a popular seaside resort for young and old bathers. The five-kilometer-long northern beach impresses with its fine, white sand and is especially well visited in the summer. The west beach is somewhat more tranquil. The town's landmarks are the 395-meter-long pier and the Darßer Ort lighthouse.

Wieck on the Darß

The state-recognized resort town of Wieck is located on the shore of the Bodstedt Bodden. The former fishing village owes its charm to numerous pipe-roofed houses and its romantic little harbor. In the national park exhibition Darßer Arche aerial photographs of the Bodden landscape can be admired and every year in April Wieck is the starting and finishing point of the Darß marathon.

Wustrow

In the narrowest part of the peninsula, between the Baltic Sea and the Saaler Bodden, lies the Baltic resort of Wustrow. On the seaside, the village has an extensive sandy beach, which invites you to swim, especially in summer. The 240-meter-long pier is also located here. On the Bodden side there is a wide landscape with meadows and reeds. In the historic harbor, Zeesboote with their typical brown sails are moored. The most prominent landmark of the former seafaring village is the church, whose 18-meter high, accessible steeple used to serve as a navigation mark and today offers a wide panoramic view of the peninsula.

On the multifaceted peninsula you will quickly find the right leisure activity: In nature, on or in the water, culture, sports or pleasure - the variety seems limitless.

Explore the Peninsula on Theme Trails

Various theme trails combine culture and nature, the past and the modern, the simple and the refined into an eventful tour on foot or by bike. On a bike tour on the art trail Ahrenshoop the places of origin of the works of famous artists can be discovered. A hike along the Darßer Haustürenpfad leads past the famous, colorfully painted and intricately carved doors in the Baltic resort of Prerow.

Horseback Ride through the Darß Forest to the Western Beach

Riding through the fragrant pine forests to the unspoiled Darß West Beach is a special experience for horse enthusiasts of all ages. But not only that: the stimulating climate of the Baltic Sea and the ethereal scents of the forest have a vitalizing effect on horse and rider.

Sailing Trips and Canoeing on the Bodden

On the deck of a traditional Zees boat in Wieck, every fellow sailor can become a skipper himself - or sit back and listen to old sailor stories. The calm Bodden offers best conditions for surfers, sailors and paddlers. A relaxed canoe tour is just the right thing to discover the Bodden landscape from the water.

Discovery Tours and Skill Training in the Middle of Nature

From May to October you can discover the hidden beauties of nature in Ribnitz-Damgarten during daily guided tours in the nature reserve "Ribnitzer Großes Moor", among others the moor frogs, which turn blue during the spawning season. Endurance, strength and dexterity, on the other hand, can be trained in the spa forest in Graal-Müritz, for example on the discovery trail suitable for children. The display boards in the active forest always provide new information about flora, fauna and the special climate of the region.

What is there to see

on the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula?

NABU Crane Center

Every year the peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst is the scene of one of the most fascinating natural spectacles: the migration of the cranes in autumn. The NABU Crane Center in Groß Mohrdorf offers information worth knowing for small and large animal lovers about the life and migration behavior of the animals, which are considered lucky charms in many cultures, and the best places to observe them throughout the year, even outside the crane season.

NATUREUM and Darßer Ort Lighthouse

For families and nature lovers a visit to the NATUREUM, the natural history museum of the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, is recommended. The museum provides insights into the diversity of species and the need for protection of the Darss flora and fauna. From the lighthouse Darßer Ort, which is located directly next to the museum, you have an excellent view of the Baltic Sea.

German Amber Museum

The amber museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten shows about 1,600 exhibits around the origin and use of amber as a gemstone. As a special treasure of the Baltic Sea region, those interested in jewelry and culture learn about the significance of the fossil resin for the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula and can work on the amber themselves in the museum's own workshop.

Experimentarium

Play, experiment and learn at the Zingst Experimentarium! The interactive museum invites young and old to put the laws of physics and mathematics to the test. In addition to the experimental rooms, children can tinker and craft in a small workshop or steer ship models on their own in the outdoor area.
